Safer Website Use. You may not want anyone to know you have been looking at this website. Take a few minutes to read this information and take steps to increase your safety when using the Internet and email.

Using a mobile or tablet

Note: “Private browsing”, “privacy” or “incognito” is a feature which disables your browsing history so that the list of websites you visit is not stored and so cannot be seen later. It is important to remember that this protection is only stops data being stored on your device and some data will still held by your provider (although this cannot be easily accessed).

Deleting your history

  1. On your device’s main menu, press on the settings icon.
  2. In the settings menu, scroll down until you find “Safari”, then press on it.
  3. Scroll down and press “Clear History and Website Data”.
  4. Press “Clear History and Data.

  2. Press the 3 dots at the top right.
  3. In the menu press “Settings”.
  4. In the settings menu, press “Privacy”.
  5. Press “Clear browsing data”.
  6. Tick your selections and press clear.

  2. Press the 3 dots at the top right.
  3. In the menu press “Settings”.
  4. Press "Privacy"
  5. Then press “Delete browsing data”.

Private browsing

  1. Open “Safari”.
  2. Click on the icon in the bottom right corner, it should be of a page in front of another page.
  3. Press the button on the bottom left corner that says “Private”. It might prompt you to keep or close your previous tabs; you make the decision.

  2. Press the 3 dots at the top right.
  3. In the menu press “New incognito tab”.

  2. Press the “tab” button at the bottom (one page over another).
  3. Press “TURN ON SECRET MODE”.

 

Using a desktop PC

If you are concerned that someone else may see you visiting this site, and you don’t want them to find out what you’re looking at, the quickest way to hide the site is to click the Leave Site tab (always on the right-hand side of the screen). You could also open another browser window and leave it open at another website, placing it behind the window to this site, then quickly close the main window

You can use a keyboard shortcut to close a window:

  • Windows: ‘ALT’ key and ‘F4’
  • Mac: ‘Apple’ key and ‘W’

Which Browser?

The instructions are slightly different for the various browsers, so you will need to know which web browser your are using. On a PC, click on the 3 dots menu and then “Help” or "Settings" and you should see something that tells you whether your are using Chrome, Internet Explorer, Firefox or Edge.

Private Browsing

INTERNET EXPLORER: Click the "Gear" icon (top right) and go to Safety – “InPrivate Browsing”.

FIREFOX: Click the Menu button with three horizontal lines then “New Private Window”.

MICROSOFT EDGE: Click the Menu button with three dots (top right) and select “New InPrivate Window”.

After you have visited the site

When you use the internet, information about a site you’ve visited is stored on your computer, this is called your Internet History. You might not want other people to see you’ve been looking at this website and there are steps you can take to hide this.

It is best to double check that nothing has been stored by following the steps below, and if anything has been stored, find out how to delete it.

CHROME

  1. Open Google Chrome.
  2. Click on the Chrome menu icon in the top right hand corner (three lines).
  3. Select ‘Tools’.
  4. Select ‘Clear browsing data’.
  5. A pop up window will appear. Choose a time range to clear from the drop down list. For example, the ‘Last Four Hours’.
  6. Tick all of the boxes.
  7. Click ‘Clear browsing data’.

INTERNET EXPLORER

  1. Click the "Gear" icon (top right) and go to Safety.
  2. Select “Delete browsing history...”.
  3. Make selections and click "Delete".

FIREFOX

  1. Click the Menu button with three horizontal lines (top right).
  2. Click on ‘History’.
  3. A pop up window will appear. Choose a time range to clear from the drop down list. For example, the ‘Last Four Hours’.
  4. Click on ‘Clear Now’.

MICROSOFT EDGE: 

  1. Click the Menu button with three dots (top right) and select “Settings”.
  2. Under the heading "Clear Browsing Data" select “Choose what to clear”.
  3. Tick your selections and click "Clear"

SAFARI (on an Apple Mac)

  1. Go to the "History" menu at top of the screen.
  2. Choose and click “Clear History...”.
  3. Make your selection from the menu and click "clear history".
